Oscar Giaconia "HOYSTERIA" - Solo Show at GAMeC

The first solo exhibition of Oscar Giaconia (Milan, 1978) in an Italian museum, this show offers an exploration of the artist’s most recent paintings. The conceptual and phonetic similarity among the words "osteria" (tavern), "ostrica" (oyster), and "isteria" (hysteria) creates an untranslatable title, a linguistic ambiguity, and a disruption of meaning embodied in the figures that inhabit the exhibition. Innkeepers, forgers, old bosuns, sentinels, ghosts, and monsters populate the Spazio Zero at GAMeC, presenting a contemporary degeneration of genre painting.
Giaconia’s linguistic obsessiveness is expressed through his use of diverse materials such as silicone, vulcanite, nylon, neoprene rubber, salpa, and elastomers. These materials reveal the dogged determination and empirical persistence of his research and painting practice. On Saturday, February 23, 2019, the twice Oscar-nominated prosthetic makeup artist Vittorio Sodano will transform Giaconia in a performance hosted in Spazio Zero at the museum, initiating the new painting machine that underpins the artist’s next work.
